What does systems science, cybernetics, and the new sciences of chaos and complexity have to do with creating healthy communities? Albert Einstein once said, "We cannot solve problems using the same thinking that created them." He also said "we have to learn to think in a new way." The new sciences enable us to learn to think in new ways, challenging our traditional cause-and-effect approach to problems, and understanding issues as not just a set of isolated parts, but components in integral relationship to one another. Even more, systems thinking helps us to understand the true nature of diversity; that our differences are complimentary, not competitive.

Explore our Desert Conversation Community online "Knowledge Space" to learn more about systems thinking, why it matters, and how we can create better futures for ourselves, our families, organizations and communities.

Sherryl Stalinski, M.A. is a fellow of the International Systems Institute and a member of the International Society for the Systems Sciences. Research and White Papers published by Aurora Now can be found online in our Resource Center.
